Criminal background checks are now required for anyone working with children-even volunteers-according to a state law former Gov. Corbett signed last fall. The state is extending implementation of the law to include professors in the 14 state universities, as some students entering college are under 18. The faculty's union is seeking to block enforcement, saying faculty members are exempt because few deal with under age students, the law exempts those who deal with any matriculated students, and the checks are costly.
